Hey, have you heard the news?
I have a new website! It's called Cash and Joy and its mission is to increase the awesomeness of the world - of course - through glorious and meaningful marketing.

Why did I focus on marketing? Because marketing can be the most fun and meaningful activity of your business instead of the most dreaded and icky... if you do it right.

The heresy month in review

Five years ago I had a mohawk. (I’ve had a lot of fun hair over the years.)

Oh, here’s a picture of it:

Like it? I did, it was fun.

Anyway, not long after I had gotten the mohawk, I was having a super-punk, damn-the-man, oh-what-a-rebel-am-I kind of day. I painted my fingernails black, laced up my favourite 8-hole Doc Martens, put on my most attitude-y shirt and radiating don’t-mess-with-me vibes I rocked my way out the door. Ooh, I was dangerous.

At the bus stop, a little old lady. She looks up at me from stompy boots to oh-so-spiky mohawk and says, “I like your hair, dear.”

Moral of the story: I suck at Attitude.

Thus I’m not surprised that, despite my best intentions, this last month has had almost no real heresy in it. (It had one controversy, but that was kind of anxious and sobering so I don’t think I want to do too much of it.) You lovely people keep agreeing with me, you fiends! It’s very nice but it hasn’t stirred up the vigorous debate I had hoped for.

However! It has accomplished something better, which is Action. There is nothing better than reading a comment or email from one of you where you’ve made significant improvements in your websites because of one of these articles. I will be trying my hardest to produce action from you in future. (You can help, tell me where you’re getting stuck or confuzzled and I’ll see what I can do.)

The plan, going forward

I like these longer posts with a five-minute mission at the end, but they do take a much longer time to write. Since I only have a limited number of hours in the day (due to the Day Job and my desire to eat, sleep and see my loved ones occasionally), if I write these longer posts I don’t get very much else done. So starting tomorrow I’m going to mix it up a bit.

Each week will feature:

  • one video post
  • one guest post (let me know if you want to guest post!)
  • one recommendation/review post
  • two or three longer heresy-style posts
  • the occasional five-minute mission

That might be on a daily schedule, but I’m not sure. What do you think?

Jump on board

I’ve extended the Short Thought video collaboration until Saturday (probably your Friday). There are already some lovely contributions… if you want to have a bit of fun, join in and send your thought.

Also on Saturday, I’ll be sending out emails to the Awesome Chat participants to organise a time for the first chat that suits them. If you want in for the very first session, sign up! I expect riotous chat and many awesome insights.

Your five-minute mission, should you choose to accept it…

Spend five minutes walking somewhere pleasant, reflecting on how you are making the world more awesome with your contribution. Because you are, you know.

Feedback!

I spend a lot of time guessing what you will enjoy and find useful. Tell anecdotes or stick to just-the-facts-ma’am? Long posts or short posts? Video: oui or non? A whole series of post with photos of my hair and the moral of the story for each? (I could seriously do that.) More of my personality, less of my personality, daily posts, weekly posts, weekly newsletter with a summary, daily newsletter with the feed? More about how to get unstuck and start producing awesome stuff, more copywriting, more technical how-tos, more cussing?

Help! In the comments, tell me what has really worked for you. Tell me questions you want answered. Tell me what you need and want me to help with!

I like the 5 minute missions a lot. I think more video would be fun. And I'd like to guest post but not this week because I have an exhibition and it's kicking my ass!

ETA: Also the little old lady hair story made me laugh out loud. Little old ladies ROCK.

    Right, so.

Um, I mostly want to comment about hair. yours? Fabulous.

    Mine? Oy. Vey.

I turn 40 on Sunday. I desperately need a haircut and it's been over 3 years since I last colored my hair. I *will* be going blonde again.

Btu this time? Bright PINK streak.

    oh yeah, baby. Awesome.

(Oh right, this was supposed to be about you.)

Go with what works! your adoring agreeable fans will be happy with a random mixed bag.

I like the 5 minutes missions, too, so glad to hear you will keep them coming. I love what you are doing now so much that I hate to see it change, but as Andrea said those of us who adore you will keep coming back for more even if it's different. Keep up the terrific ideas, and enjoy having a bit of a life (I'm sure we'll still get the lion's share). :)

I shall write you down for a future guest post. Good luck with the exhibition, it sounds aces!

I am totally looking forward to becoming a little old lady, too. :)

Pink? Schweet! I had candy-floss pink hair once and I loved it. :)

    Happy birthday for Sunday!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Aww, Wendy. I will do whatever I can to make you happy. :)

You do indeed get the most of me, but it's such a pleasure to give it that I don't mind!

Personally, I prefer to keep a relatively normal outward appearance. That way I maintain the element of surprise. (When you come up with a product like “Emo Oil. All the angst of goth, but only half the calories. Or Emo. it's Goth Lite. Or Emo. All the angst, half the makeup. I was surrounded by boring people. After those, I was alone. At least I had the voices to keep me company)

As to the content. Bring it on. I like the 5 minute missions (always nice to have something quick to do that I can tick off the list. my favourite list item is Tick something off the list. It's self-fulfilling) The video posts are great and I'm happy to sacrifice my limited bandwidth to watch them. And as long as you review awesome products, the only problem there is financial, in that I may not be able to get them.

Keep up the awesome. I always look forward to reading your site.

    Catherine,
I enjoy all of your posts and appreciate all the time and effort you put into making us smile while we read and then *boom* help me get that aha at the end. You've got great style.. but of course you already know that.
Whatever works for you will be lovely. I'm guessing that your newly started chats (must sign up) will provide you with loads of ideas and topics – so I'll happily follow along.

    Phyllis

PS love to guest post sometime – would you consider doing the same on my fledgling website?

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Would love to, would love you to, love you in general!

It's funny but in real life I am terrible at getting to the point. My stories meander all over the place and never get to the aha moment. I write better than I talk.
