Hey, have you heard the news?
I have a new website! It's called Cash and Joy and its mission is to increase the awesomeness of the world - of course - through glorious and meaningful marketing.

Why did I focus on marketing? Because marketing can be the most fun and meaningful activity of your business instead of the most dreaded and icky... if you do it right.

Stop tweaking your design

Design matters. But it only matters so far.

Change your design until it has:

  • clear and effective navigation
  • enough white space to not look crowded
  • a few effective images
  • a defined visual hierarchy (where the most important elements are the biggest, boldest and most obvious)
  • no more than two, maybe three fonts
  • no more than three, maybe four colours
  • a search box, and a few other methods for finding content if needed
  • minimal clutter
  • passed your tests on the desired actions: buying products, signing up for the newsletter, etc

Then stop! Leave the design alone for at least two months, only making changes if they’re really problematic (like not being able to pay money).

Resist the urge to re-do the design because you think it’s gotten “stale”. It’s a good sign when you’re getting a bit sick of the look; that means it’s getting familiar and comfortable for your visitors. Keep a list for feedback and ideas, but don’t implement them.

Instead, spend all that extra time writing content and building relationships. If you use tweaking your design as an avoidance activity (instead of doing the important but scary stuff), be very careful not to replace it with a different avoidance activity. Your Twitter background can wait, and your business cards are fine. So is your logo. Stop it. (Some of you are clutching your chests and thinking, “Oh no! She’s on to me! But how does she know?” Yeah, umm, I just guessed. I’ve never spent three hours changing my colour schemes so finely that no-one noticed but me. Nope.)

Ask questions, and get crystal clear on what your visitors need from you and what they respond to.

Then do your next redesign with a focus on those things.

Your 5-minute mission, should you choose to accept it…

If your website does not currently have a design with the desirable features above, schedule time and/or money to rectify it.

If your website does have all those features, start the tweak list. And stop fiddling with the design.

What stage are you at with your website design? Tell us in the comments!

Hee, I am tweaking things at the moment. In my defence – you told me to! Btw, I've written to my designer about that 'bottom of the post' issue. I'm hoping to make it a lot more obvious how to comment and how to share.

See, there's a difference. The tweaks we talked about were stuff to get you closer to that ideal place. Once you're done, you have to stop and get back to writing, tweeting and making art! :)

Yep, I'm clear on the difference.

The urge to tweak my site is something that happens to me periodically – I'll go for ages without doing anything, then suddenly decide it's time for a spring clean. Third Tribe propelled me into this one. Being over there has been eye-opening for me and I've learnt so much. So I was already thinking about website stuff and making lists before our coaching session, which was great because I was in a good space to hear what you had to say.

I'm going to tackle the subscribe buttons next, plus I want to make it more enticing for people to click on my gallery pages, so I'm going to add an image to the sidebar & redo the gallery pages so they load a bit faster. But it's OK if it doesn't all happen straight away.

These are all good and useful changes and I support them. Come back to me if you feel a sudden need to play further, though. :)

[sitting here clutching my chest] Okay, got me. Bullseye. BUT – I have to remind myself that in the last 36 hours I've actually WRITTEN STUFF! Now, to keep the content flowing.

And I just had an idea this morning that I should start a new blog with a more targeted audience and a different look. It's been on my mind all day, content ideas and all. Damn, Catherine – you ARE in my head, aren't you? :D

It's nice in your head! There's lot of interesting things going on and the colour schemes are great. :)

Woohoo, finally a five minute mission that I've pretty much completed before it got put up. The design tweaks are finished with the exception of one annoying thing that seems to be broken, but it doesn't need to be fixed.

Everything else at this point is content. At least until the site has earned enough to pay for it's own redesign by a professional.

(Need to sort out the static pages, and post more content, including a review of Tank Girl, which I hope I can find in the local DVD shop otherwise i just may have to use “user requested review” as an excuse to buy it. Just remembered that it has a kick ass soundtrack – perhaps I'll have to get that as well)

And I'm going to be humming “Let's do it” for the rest of the day.

Excellent, excellent! Look forward to the review and more content.
