Hey, have you heard the news?
I have a new website! It's called Cash and Joy and its mission is to increase the awesomeness of the world - of course - through glorious and meaningful marketing.

Why did I focus on marketing? Because marketing can be the most fun and meaningful activity of your business instead of the most dreaded and icky... if you do it right.

Review: Charlie and Johnny Jam Sessions

It’s Review Thursday, where I talk about the nifty products that I have bought or received for free. This particular product hath no affiliate links and is one I’ve been subscribed to for nearly a year.

Business strategy is important stuff. It’s easy to get enmeshed in the small-decision running of your Thing and forget to step back and look at the big picture. To evaluate, to plan for growth, or trim out the crap that doesn’t work any longer.

Tragically, most business strategy resources are super-dull.

The Charlie and Johnny Jam Sessions, to the rescue!

Obvious stuff first: the Jam Sessions feature Charlie Gilkey and Johnny B. Truant, jamming on a subject for an hour, twice a month.

They bring very different styles to the Jam Sessions. Charlie is a soft-spoken Southern ex-Marine productivity coach with a philosophy degree (why yes, that is the best bio ever), and Johnny is a brash, bold comedian with a pedigree in small business and a black belt in marketing. Interestingly, they don’t outright disagree that often, but they do differ on word choice and implementation pretty regularly. It gives you two slightly different ways to think about any idea they mention.

And oh man do they talk about a lot of ideas. At first they used to apologise for getting endlessly sidetracked, but now it’s just accepted as part of the format. Because it’s amazing. Sometimes it just adds more items to the “To Think About” list, and sometimes a sidetrack turns into a much stronger point than the original one. Sometimes there’s a major revelation born mid-Jam.

Also, as they mentioned in the latest session, it’s equally fascinating to hear how much they’ve grown over the last almost-year. The answer: a lot. Instead of being one of those, “I have Made It and now I will unbend my wisdom to thee, lowly mortal,” lectures, it’s coming from people who are doing well but not unachievably so. They talk about the mistakes they were making a few months ago. The mistakes they’re making now! It always feels doable.

Oh, also they interview other fantastic people regularly, and that is pretty cool. I prefer the non-interview ones because Charlie and Johnny alone create a rhythm of thought and speech that’s beautiful to listen to and leads to tiny inspirations exploding all over the place like a bag of popcorn.

So, how much for twice-monthly bursts of inspiration and clarity?

$25/month. This is a sweet deal. Go listen to the free sessions available on the website if you want to learn more.

Any Jammy questions? Tell me in the comments!

I adore The Jam Sessions, Charlie and Johnny rock and they talk about business in a way that the business-phobic (that would be me!) can grok. This and the Awesome Chat are my two favourite monthly business expenses.

I’ve considered these. Thanks for the great review. Would it be good for a very beginner, or better later on?

    Hooray for us! :)

Both, really. They always talk about topics you need to think about, whether before you start (if you’re smart) or later (if you’re me). :)

Thanks for the great review, Catherine! You reinforced some hunches we’ve had about the Jams, and we’re going to be changing a few things going forward.

What I love about the Jams is that Johnny and I pull out different – and mostly better – parts of each other. It’s one of those things that just mysteriously works, even though you wouldn’t expect it to. At least, that’s what Naomi told us. :)

Either, I think, Elizabeth – I’m still a business beginner and I’ve learnt a ton. What I like about them is that they make it not boring.

You’re welcome, Charlie. You really do create a wonderful resource together. :)
