Hi Mike, you could do what I do at the Day Job... I turned off all forms of email notification but left tasks and appointment on. Reminders flash up automatically, but I don't go near the inbox until I've finished what I'm working on. It takes a little discipline, but does get ris of email interrupting my train of thought.

P.S. Thanks for email. All fixed now!

Good article Patrick. My favorite line is: "Remember. This is your email. You own it, and it doesn’t own you." I think I should email that to myself every day as a reminder :)

Email is a hard one. I revamped my system a lot after reading David Allen's book, "Getting Things Done". While I rarely get to "inbox zero", I have things a lot more under control.

One problem I run into with shutting down Outlook is that I use its reminder feature for appointments and tasks. Also, I will often end up back in email -- sometimes just to review emails for a task I'm working on or an upcoming appointment.

I guess the answer is to separate mail, task, and calendar programs but I have that with Google and it has its evils, too.

Anyway, thanks for the tips. I agree completely with your points about shorter e-mails. Now if we could just get people to leave shorter blog comments :)
