Do you want to grow an awesome website?
Hi! I'm a drawing of Catherine. She does most of the writing here, including this blurb. (Does this count as writing in the third person?) Catherine believes that websites don't really run on technology, they run on emotions. If you agree, then she wants to help you rock it out and be awesome online.

How Websites Work, Part 2: Domain names

Last time I talked about servers and IP addresses, and this time we build on that to include how domain names come into the picture.

I was wrestling with a few problems while shooting this video:

  • I’m still really new to this process and it’s still terrifying
  • My camera kept turning itself off every 50 seconds
  • It was an insane 36 Celcius degrees today!
  • It was an insane 96.8 degrees Farenheit today! (That’s for you imperialists. I wish I used Farenheit, it makes high temperatures seem MUCH more impressive.)

So when I realised that the shiny new whiteboard I had purchased to add some visual flair was, tragically, TOO shiny and therefore unreadable, I’d been sweating for 2 hours and didn’t want to play any more.

What the whiteboard says is:
BeAwesomeOnline.com 69.163.206.4
www.BeAwesomeOnline.com 69.163.206.4
mail.BeAwesomeOnline.com 69.123.101.1
mail.BeAwesomeOnline.com 69.123.101.2

These aren’t the actual IP addresses, because I ran out of space and put in slightly shorter ones.

In one of the sections that got lost by my camera’s psychosis, I explained the mail records. These are the records for the email servers that deliver your email; any reputable email provider has at least two in case one is unavailable.

So, I hope that was useful to you! Please leave a comment below if it did, or if you need anything clarified further. Or if you want to complain about the weather.
