Hey, have you heard the news?
I have a new website! It's called Cash and Joy and its mission is to increase the awesomeness of the world - of course - through glorious and meaningful marketing.

Why did I focus on marketing? Because marketing can be the most fun and meaningful activity of your business instead of the most dreaded and icky... if you do it right.

Get Catherine to BlogWorld

I have a Thing about being left out. Long-time readers know this, because I have fucked up a few times because of it. As an increasingly awesome (and emotionally mature) adult, I’ve gotten better at managing this Thing until it doesn’t cause me to do stupid stuff in public.

But I still want to be included. I still yearn to be included.

One of my first logging-in-this-morning activities hit that button hard. Naomi from Ittybiz is one of my shining inspirations – her products and information have been big milestones (signposts? Metaphor fail. No they’ve been milestones AND signposts: they both pointed the way and got me taking momentous action) on my journey to rockin’ self-employment. And so when her link sent me to a totally kick-ass event she and Johnny and Lee are hosting the day before BlogWorld, which I already really wanted to go to…

…oh MAN did I want to be there. So idly, as you do, I wandered over to the airline ticket websites. Just to check, you understand. Just out of curiosity. And when I saw that the plane tickets were only $625 each way…

It wouldn’t hurt to do all the math, I thought. Hmm… early-order BlogWorld tickets just under $900 (ouch), plus $200 for the QTR event, it’s… just under $250 to get my passport – yes, I don’t have a passport, I’ve never travelled despite wanting to, it’s tragic – and somewhere under $100/night for the hotel, depending on where I stay, don’t need a visa…

My total? About $3500. Let’s say $4000, assuming I’ve missed a number of things.

That’s… a pretty small number. That’s actually doable, maybe.

Probably.

Hell, why not?

My magnificent plan I just made up

The early-order discount for BlogWorld tickets ends at midnight on the 16th of September. If I’ve made $4,000 by then I’ll book it. If I’ve made $5,000 by then, I’ll add a week to the plane tickets and go visiting some of my North American peeps.

I’ve been making plans to re-organise my consulting offerings now that I’m getting an idea of what you need. Screw planning, it’s time for ACTION! So today I will be adding, editing and removing sales pages like no-one’s business. The expanded offerings will include:

- broadening my brainstorming services to include domain names, products and services as well as taglines

- adding regular one-on-one sessions for people who need support, accountability and someone to tell them they’re on the right track

- adding some kick-ass information-and-action packages that will revolutionise your not-quite-awesome-yet website or turbocharge your already-good one

(If you want to know more, or need something else you know I could provide, email me at catherine@beawesomeonline.com)

How you can help

If you’ve been thinking of adding increased awesomeness to your website through consulting, learning how to wrangle your website fears, or gaining wisdom from the most comprehensive how-to-start-an-awesome-website resource of all time, now’s the time to buy.

If you want a taste of how utterly fantastic working with me is (and it really is, there are hundreds of nice people who will tell you), the next Awesome Chat is on in just a few days. For $25/month you get access to two calls with me and a half-dozen other wonderful, insightful darlings. There’s more inspiration in one call than you could carry in a bucket.

If you know someone who has been wanting to start a website for ages, call them up and say, “Steve, there’s this really great resource that will help”. (This only works if they’re called Steve. Feel free to adjust as required.)

And please spread the word about this website to the delightful weirdos you know that need it.

Oh, and for the people who I KNOW will ask, here’s a donation button:

The special super nifty bonus

If you help me do this, I owe you. I will happily do an hour-long interview for your website, tell everyone about how nifty you are, or send you naked photos. Of myself, even. I’ll give you special insider updates of all the fantastic stuff that happens on my first-ever overseas trip. And because I rarely drink alcohol, I’ll be the sober one at the party, with all the bestest gossip.

And I’ll do a special ask-me-anything Q&A session next week for the people who bought stuff, referred people who bought stuff, or told all their friends.

That’s you, right? Tell me in the comments!

[Edited to add: OMG there are now prizes for donating, since even more people than I thought are insane. You realise you could just buy things, right? More info about the prizes tomorrow! Let me just say that they are ACE.]

Special offers!

Jordan of NotAProBlog.com has offered consulting for you on how to get noticed in your niche, write clickable tweets and attractive articles: 30 minutes for $50 and 1 hour for $75, with all proceeds going into my BlogWorld fund. (Email me or leave a comment if you’re interested. A personalised session from a stand-up comedian on how to get attention? It sounds utterly fantastic: I’d take him up on the offer if it wasn’t weird to do so.)

Heather from The Mogul Mom has generously offered to pay me the proceeds from anyone who buys Get Famous Fast with the code “BEAWESOME”.

Andy Dolph has used this week as a clever excuse to launch his intriguing new product: using unconscious beat rhythms and spoken word, customised to you, to help change one of your unconscious beliefs. Forever. Science and mysticism combine to make a super-cool product! And this week, all the proceeds go to the fund. Check it out.

Jade and I made a fantastic and relevant product in one weekend: Awesome non-icky conference networking. Jade’s already being flown out to BlogWorld for her stunning awesomeness at connecting with the right people, so her share of the proceeds is paying for our fake wedding and icecreams. (Don’t ask.)

Shawn is very kindly offering logo design for only $250 and e-book covers for $150, with proceeds into the fund. (That’s such a sweet deal he can only offer three. Run!)

And the ever-beautiful Danielle of White Hot Truth has offered one copy of her totally fantastic Firestarter Sessions with proceeds to the fund. Go, buy it and let me know.

Prizes for donating!

Kirsty, my favourite obsessive artist, offered two consulting sessions and three secret art envelopes.

Then super-spiffy Holly volunteered two half-hour copywriting sessions.

And LaVonne added two voice-coaching sessions.

Not to be outdone, Birdy added an Encouraging Diploma Kit, a tarot story and a wrapped crystal.

And from Amy, your own cartoon! Booyah!

Then Andy through in two copies of Journey to the Spirit of Healing.

You guys ROCK ON TOAST. Thank you.

  • http://completeflake.com/ LaVonne Ellis

You are so awesome. This is the way to do it – just go for it. :) I want to go to, and I don’t have the plane ticket problem. Was even thinking I might drive there and hang out outside the conference, meeting peeps in the lobby or something. Then the Great Car Disaster of 2010 hit and took precedence, but who knows? Maybe I’ll raise enough to fix the car, and then we can meet in the lobby!

  • http://andydolph.com Andy Dolph

    That’s AWESOME!

And if you want to come to New Hampshire (the part that’s near Boston) you’d be more then welcome to crash at my place. I’d LOVE to meet you in person!

  • http://kirstyhall.co.uk/blog/ Kirsty Hall

I will mention it in my next round-up, which should be this Friday. I wish I could help more but I am as skint as a very skint thing right now. I did sign up for the Awesome Chat again earlier today. :)

  • Naomi Dunford

OK, people? This is urgent. Listen to this. I will give it its own blog post very soon but for those reading this now, please… read it now.

    DO NOT GO TO BLOGWORLD.

    Go to Vegas DURING BlogWorld.

That’s what I did last year and it’s what I’m doing this year. I did it at SXSW, too.

I am bringing myself and possibly two people to this event. That’s $2700. I don’t know about you guys but I can think of a hell of a lot of better shit to spend $2700 on in Las Vegas than the privilege of hanging around a conference centre.

So, yeah. I mean, if you win a bazillion dollars, sure, go. But otherwise? People, this is VEGAS. Did you know Cirque de Soleil has a show about sex? SEX! Cirque du Soleil and SEX! THIS is what Vegas is made for. Spend your money on that.

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

You did and it counts! Yay you!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Well that makes it even easier. It’s like you donated $900! Thanks Naomi! :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

According to Naomi that’s the way to do it.

    Also, screw maybe. Do it!!!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

    *adding to itinerary* :)

  • http://completeflake.com/ LaVonne Ellis

Brilliant! I was thinking the same thing, except I forgot about all the things Vegas is famous for. That’s because I lived there for three years a long time ago and had to ignore all that if I wanted to get by on my paycheck. Cirque du Soleil and SEX? Hmm. Your 28-day make-people-love-you plan better work!

  • http://twitter.com/a_creative_life Melissa Dinwiddie

Catherine, I love your idea! Might have to copy it…

And Naomi, thanks for the tip! It’s a time issue as much as a money issue for me, but I sure love your thinking!

  • Anonymous

I’m going where Dave is, seeing as he covered my travel expenses :-P But we are planning to attend a few kick arse sessions (un-marketing keynote, anyone?) and spend the rest of the time hanging out. That’s the part I’m helping out with.

Coz I’ll be working I’m planning to go to vegas next year and check out the crazy awesome stuff. And Zappos. I’m shattered that this is happening on my zappos and possibly skydiving day :P

  • Anonymous

I can’t help out seeing the money I’ve spent on your awesome stuff but I’ll refer more people your way. I wont blast my peeps but you are one of the first names I mention when people are like ‘Jade! I need heeeeelp!’

And i feel all gah coz everyones like ‘oooh i need 4-5k’ and its like ‘wah? I’m doing this on, er, well I’d bought my ticket to bwe BEFORE I got the offer, so it’s kinda different :P

I had to get my passport too. And birth certificates. Pain in the arse but now I can go anywhere :D

  • http://completeflake.com/ LaVonne Ellis

If I can get the car fixed in time and if a few other things work out, I’ll
do it. ::deep breath:: That means I’ll need to raise at least $3000 myself.
Or I could take a plane. That would be a lot cheaper than fixing the car,
    lol.

    ~LaVonne

  • http://www.heavenandel.com El Edwards

I need to check my bank account first because I think my birthday money is running low after all those learning type things I’ve been secretly buying but in the meantime, I’ll tweet this and try and add some more money via your shiny orange button … sod it! Checking bank accounts is for whimps and losers. It’s only a little bit but it’s got to help right?

Dead jealous (in a lovely, positive, smiley way of course) and just wish we could persuade you all over to Wales one year.

    Have fun :-)

  • http://www.pattyk.com Patty K

I have a sneaking suspicion that you and Vegas will get along very well!

  • http://completeflake.com/ LaVonne Ellis

    Woot! Round-trip air fare: $159!!!

    ~LaVonne

  • http://www.skajawills.com skaja wills

I can’t go to Vegas, cause it’s a couple days after my ring ceremony with Sam, but if you come to the States, you’re totally welcome to crash with us in FL, or we could roadtrip somewhere and meet other awesome people you meet. :)

As for $, I’m signing up for more Awesome Chat right after I post this. :)

I have complete and utter confidence that you will EXCEED your goal! I hope to meet you in Vegas, I’ll be there that same week (not going to BlogWorld, sadly :( but still up for hanging out!) jen :)

  • Anonymous

:) Donated. Hope to see you there. I want you to tell everyone how awesome I am and I also want a naked picture. I don’t care who it is. $20 bucks worth of awesome and naked.

  • http://completeflake.com/ LaVonne Ellis

Yah, with hotel and only staying one night, maybe $500. That sounds more
    doable…

  • http://lisa-unmasked.com Lisa MB

What an amazing group of supporters you have gathered, darling. Love that you just PUT IT OUT THERE. Ask for what you want, people!

Not sure Vegas can handle you & Naomi at the same time, but send pics!! :) (And thanks for allowing me to support YOU.)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Wouldn’t it be awesome if we went together? It would!!!

  • Tapeleg

OK, I have to ask, since I’ve been seeing it so much lately. What is with all the swearing lately? I understand having your own voice and all that, but it seems like it’s really overboard lately.

I swear in real life, so this isn’t an I’m-a-prude thing (but it may be, since I just typed that), but why is it so prevalent these days on your blog?

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

It’s a stunningly exciting thing. Make sure you have lots and lots of wonderful readers before you do it, and prepare to sniffle with joy. :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

    It’s all good. :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

    You utter darling, thank you!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

I am planning my feathers-and-fans costume already! :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

    1. Thank you.

    2. Awesome! Added to the itinerary!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

How fantabulous would that be? Wahooooo!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Done and done, madam. Thank you so much. :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

You wonderful sweetie, thank you for your generosity!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Oh, it’s a good question. I tend to cycle in and out on swearing. Sometimes I do pretty much none, and sometimes my internal sailor comes on board. It tends to happen when I’m frustrated or very very excited.

I hope it’s not too offputting for you. I have deliberately avoided self-censorship for reasons I shall write a long blog post about someday.

  • Tapeleg

If it’s offputting, I guess that’s kind of on me. Kind of. I’ll chalk it up to a barrier to entry.

It’s a choice I was curious about, since I see it elsewhere as well. And oddly enough, from people doing stuff like you are doing. I just don’t know where the choice comes from.

I do a podcast, and I keep it clean. It’s a (niche) sports podcast, and ‘working blue’ wouldn’t be outside the realm of expected content to drop in f-bombs and the like. When my guests ask, I tell them I keep it clean, and I haven’t had an issue. My co-host of old dropped an ‘S’ and I editing it out (with his understanding).

I don’t consider it censorship at all, just a choice. Editorial, if you will.

  • http://twitter.com/andrewsalman Andrew 苏安德 Salman

    OHMYGOODNESSGEEZE!

You *have* to make that $5,000 so you can spend a day in Kentucky so I can pick your brain in person! There’ll be snickerdoodles (the super-amazing-awesome ones by best friend’s grandmother makes) in it for you, I promise!

  • http://twitter.com/andrewsalman Andrew 苏安德 Salman

Also, I just gave you practically $600, or else I would TOTALLY donate to the cause. BRING CATHERINE TO THE STATES!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

That is the bestest plan ever. Tell your friends about how nifty AWE is and we’ll make it happen, baybee! :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Your $600 means I don’t have to worry about paying the rent and bills this week and am free to do mad things like this. And bless you again for it. :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

I shall write that article soon. It’s a deliberate choice, and their are reasons. I’ll be interested in your thoughts on it once it’s done. (Probably within the next two weeks since it’s on my mind again.)

  • http://wahmbizbuilder.com/ Melinda | SuperWAHM

Forget the sex, Blogworld is going to have Naomi, James Chartrand, Jade Craven, Dave Navarro, Catherine Caine et al… I want to go and meet people, I can get all the rest of that stuff any time.

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

This is a great point. It’s better than sex!

  • http://wahmbizbuilder.com/ Melinda | SuperWAHM

Y’know, I hadn’t even noticed the swearing and I usually do. Since I don’t swear (ok, very rarely) I tend to notice when others do. You know I’m going to go back and look for it now don’t you? LOL!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

There’s about one every post or two in the last couple of weeks. :)

  • Anonymous

GO CATHERINE! I love your enthusiasm and willingness to put yourself out there to be a shining example to all of us about the nature of action! It would have been too easy just to sit back and say “nah, I’ll never be able to come up with that much cash in that time” but instead, believing anything is possible, you’ve started the ball rolling. Congratulations! To help out, I’ve done my bit – the benefits of being on payroll :-) Cant wait to hear about the adventure! x

  • Mike Korner

Depends on the sex I guess :)

  • Mike Korner

To quote Jade quoting the voice in your head …. doooo iiiiiiit!

  • http://www.anencouragingbird.com BirdyD

Well, if you’re into feathers & fans, save the date to join MikeD & I at DragonCon next year (this year’s was this last weekend). Thousands of Weirdos, most of them Delightful, and lots of Awesomeness to boot! :-D

(And it doesn’t cost nearly as much, either! :-D )

And yes, pls add Ann Arbor-ish to the itinerary. As long as you aren’t allergic to Small Furred Personnel, you are more than welcome to crash on the couch here. Or we can bring up the futon mattress from the basement. Whichever. :-)

Will be signing up for Chat sometime between now & Friday. Yay, chat! More inspiration than you can shake a stick at! :-D

  • http://www.anencouragingbird.com BirdyD

Rich Dad, Poor Dad dude talks about his Rich Dad’s attitude never being one of ‘oh, can’t afford it’, but always rather ‘how can I afford it?’. Then he would take steps to make it so, if he deemed it appropriate to do so.

Can throw in choccy-chip cookies or mint M&M cookies into the mix. Still trying to figure out the logistics of export when one of us will always be in the hot time of the year. :-D

And before you make that list tomorrow, let me know what-all you need, description-wise, etc.. MikeD & I have Goodies to add in to the mix. :-)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

    You wonderful darling!

Action is everything. The right action is even better. :)

  • http://www.fluentin3months.com/ Benny the language hacker

Hope you make it! I’ll be there too – also coming from far away just for the event. As Naomi suggests, I’m going to Vegas and attending blogworld, rather than going to blogworld :) (Although blogworld is really my main motivation of course!) I’ll make it worthwhile and check out the Hoover Dam & Grand Canyon since they are day trips, as well as Vegas itself.
Was expensive, but way less than your budget since I’m coming from Europe instead and got the weekend pass and discount on staying at the hotel (and am sharing a room for that too). Keep in mind that you can definitely make it on a tighter budget if you sacrifice just the Thursday pass, and stay a short bus or tram ride away at a hotel down the road for $20-50 a night – there are more good ones than you would think from what I hear. You can also share the hotel with someone else going. I’ve got two queen sized beds in my room. (The other one is for Karol Gajda).
If you make it get in touch with me and we’ll have a non-Americans-who-flew-thousands-of-kilometres-to-hang-out-with-bloggers mini-meeting!

  • http://www.YourCreativeBlog.com Monette Satterfield

    Catherine – SOLD!

I’ll be sending you a message privately about some consulting. I’ve been planning to do it anyway – you know, when I was ready and all – but your situation and the chance to be a part of your solution did it.

    Talk to you soon :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

    Hooray and thank you!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

That’s wonderful, and thank you for the fantastic tips!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

It’s an interesting change for me to go from “I wish I could” to “how can I?”.

And thanks for the cookie and donation offers. :)

  • http://www.anencouragingbird.com BirdyD

And remember – you could always work it out to share a hotel room! Take a tip from the sci-fi crowd – if you can find a compatible person, it cuts the costs down hugely.

puts good energies towards your going! :-)

(let me know if you’d like some goodies too, for Donation Temptationing. :>)

  • http://www.anencouragingbird.com BirdyD

Most welcome :-) Hope you got my e-mail re: Goodies.

Can’t wait to see what the next post will be! :-)
