Hey, have you heard the news?
I have a new website! It's called Cash and Joy and its mission is to increase the awesomeness of the world - of course - through glorious and meaningful marketing.

Why did I focus on marketing? Because marketing can be the most fun and meaningful activity of your business instead of the most dreaded and icky... if you do it right.

Ideas are tricky little buggers: sometimes you have to step outside of your usual routines to trap the good ones. In the list below, steer away from actions you perform regularly. Try something new and you’ll discover a bunch of new ideas lurking!

1. Buy a book. Buying a book instead of borrowing it makes you more likely to think of it as important and pay attention to the information inside. (I use BetterWorldBooks.com because they recycle old books and give them a new life. Also, cheaper shipping to Australia, score.)

2. Chat to a stranger. Open up a conversation with the person in front of you in the line at the post office. If they’re unresponsive, try someone else. Why yes, it is awkward! But if you’re always talking to the same few people then you’re missing out on an awful lot of ways to see the world. And a lot of really awesome ideas.

3. Read a political blog. One that you violently disagree with! Spend some time trying hard to understand their viewpoint. Why do they feel the way they do? Do their ideas make sense, even if you don’t agree with them?

4. Read a magazine. Get something you’d never read in a squillion years. (Crotchet Monthly? Truck Haulers World? Mad About Mandolin?)

5. Go somewhere new. I don’t mean Guatemala, (although if you can afford it send me photos), even three suburbs over is fine. Have lunch, people-watch in the park, see what’s the same and what’s slightly different.

6. Eat a scary meal. Your idea of scary and mine will likely differ. (Internal organs? Shudder.) Choose something that is edible (in the sense that you can see people eating it), but that you’d never, ever considered putting in your mouth.

Nice to see someone else touting betterworld. They are by far my favourite online book company. (cheap shipping to South Africa is also a bonus)

One thing I do when I need ideas is browse the local book store, especially sections that I don't normally go into. I find flipping through a couple of random books and reading a page here or there normally sparks something off.

A second thing I do is people watch. I go to a coffee shop (i have a favourite in the local shopping centre where I can hide out in the corner) get some form of caffeine delivery system and watch the people walk past. Depending on whether I am a happy bunny or not a happy bunny, I either think very sarcastic thoughts about what they are wearing, or I look at what they've bought and wonder if that'll make them happy. Often trying to think like someone else does wonders for inspiration.

The third thing I do is type a random phrase into google and hit “I'm feeling lucky” just this one can be severely not safe for work, so you do need to be a little careful.

Finally, I like trawling uncyclopedia (I like to think I can write humour so uncyclopedia is always good inspiration) The article on Kitten Huffing at least makes me laugh even if I don't think of anything else while I'm there.

(I was sure I could work some form of Spanish Inquisition joke in here, but no-one would have expected it)
