5 minute mission: Do the icky stuff

We’ve all got tasks that we put off. They’re so embarrassing (or boring or smelly or frustrating or icky or scary or money-related) that we cringe just thinking about them. They’re always pushed to the absolute bottom of the to-do list. So on top of the dread of the task, we end up with a painful emotion sundae: a bowl of dread with shame fudge, sprinkled with guilt and adorned with a nagging-internal-voice cherry. Yum.

For today’s mission we need to spend just 5 minutes on the icky stuff. Set an alarm clock and work it as hard as you can, no more excuses. By the time the bell goes, you’ll have a weight off your shoulders and at least one much-delayed job finished. It might feel so good to have the damn thing gone that you do another one…

  • I sorrowfully did not follow this yesterday and had to say "I am sooooo sorry" - several times. Yikes!
  • That's okay, you've still got today (and tomorrow) to get stuff done. How about doing one now and seeing how it goes?
  • Would you believe me if I told you I have no icky chores? But there is one thing I'm putting off because it might be tricky and involves playing with the coding. It's 1.30am here so I can't do it now but I promise I'll give it a try tomorrow. Feel free to remind me ;)
  • I'm pretty sure it's tomorrow now. Get started!
  • Well technically, it's not tomorrow for another 54 minutes because technically, I wrote that in the wee hours of today (Feb 3rd). However, I'm really just using that as an excude because I had a meeting and so haven't tackled any icky stuff yet. Hubby goes to work early tomorrow so I promise, promise, promise I'll give it a go then.

Thanks for the reminder. Much appreciated :D
  • It's definitely tomorrow now. Did it go well?
  • It's been a tricky one. But yes, I've done one bit of yucky stuff ;)
  • Congrats!
  • I just love "a bowl of shame fudge"! That was a great image to jolt me into doing TWO icky chores. Thanks
  • Awesome! What kind of chores were they?
  • Well, my students loans were late, and there was a whole mess to be straightened out, which was totally icky, so I avoided doing it. (Word of advice, don't be late with your student loans!) So I had to spend several hours on the phone straightening out their mess, but I finally made my payment.

AND I finally cleared out the "to take care of (eventually)" folder in my email inbox. Some stuff had been in there so long, I figured why bother, and deleted it. But I got through the rest and for the first time in months, it's totally empty. That feels great!
  • Those are two GREAT things to have done and off your mind. I bet today will be more creative as a result!
