Hey, have you heard the news?
I have a new website! It's called Cash and Joy and its mission is to increase the awesomeness of the world - of course - through glorious and meaningful marketing.

Why did I focus on marketing? Because marketing can be the most fun and meaningful activity of your business instead of the most dreaded and icky... if you do it right.

There are a bazillion worthwhile things you COULD be doing to build your online presence. To name a few:

  • analysing statistics
  • connecting on Twitter
  • commenting on other blogs
  • writing more content
  • tweaking keywords
  • guest posting
  • updating your theme
  • answering questions in forums
  • shooting video

You don’t have to do all of them; you only need to do a few of them well to succeed. And the best part is that you can choose your web strategy. You can do some actions, and outsource, delegate or ignore the others. (Dirty secret: I have never, ever touched the keywords or metadata of this site. Shameful!) In case I am being unclear on this part:

You can choose the actions that you like to do.

1. Spend a few minutes writing down all the actions you could be taking to improve your online presence.

2. Highlight the actions you hate. (If you hate ALL of them… umm… quit?) For each, decide: you should either pay/beg someone else to do it, or strike it off the list.

3. Once you decide they’re not for you, stop feeling guilty! You’re better with a less-efficient strategy that you enjoy and will keep doing than the most super-duper optimised list of actions that you feel anxious or bored about.

4. Go through the enjoyable actions and choose which three you’ll focus on. You can use whatever criteria suit you: cheap, time requirement, ROI, flexibility, expert advice…

5. Make sure you schedule time for the top three every week, or maybe even every day. Fit in the other enjoyable ones in when you can.

My top 3 actions are writing new content, Twitter and commenting in blogs and forums. What are yours? Tell us in the comments!
