Hey, have you heard the news?
I have a new website! It's called Cash and Joy and its mission is to increase the awesomeness of the world - of course - through glorious and meaningful marketing.

Why did I focus on marketing? Because marketing can be the most fun and meaningful activity of your business instead of the most dreaded and icky... if you do it right.

Pay attention to your goals

Do you know, dearest, why to-do lists, vision boards and affirmation notes on your mirror work?

It’s because of attention. We direct our attention to the things in our field of vision. If we don’t give ourselves conscious reminders then we default to whatever’s around: our inbox, the thousand-fold distractions of social media, the furniture… nothing meaningful, nothing long-term, nothing great.

I’ve deliberately added more reminders to myself as the study has become my work-centre. I have Charlie Gilkey‘s famous line Do Epic Shit on a sign on the study door. I have artwork I bought because it reminds me of how I want to rock the world. And I’ll be daring the Wrath of the Real Estate Agent to put up some work on the wall behind my monitor. All of these small changes have helped, a lot.

The ever-wonderful Alexia shared a clever tip with me from one of her mentors. If you have a numbered goal you need to achieve (chapters written, clients signed up, guest posts completed) then stick up the same number of blank Post-It notes somewhere in your field of vision. As you sign up the clients/finish the chapter/email the guest post you write the name on it. Wonderful! You always know how close you are to the goal, how much progress you’ve already made, and your brain gets a subtle reminder every single time you look in that direction, “Oh yeah! Must get that done.”

What a fantastic idea! I’ll be using it to track signups for my Next Big Thing, which is only days away from going live (and if you want in on the ground floor, don’t forget to sign up for the Advanced Awesomeness list).

How about you, sweetpea? What glorious goals do you need to keep in the forefront of your mind? Any other tips to share on how to keep your attention focused over time? Tell me in the comments!

    Post-its. Brilliant.

I love numbered goals too – there’s nothing like counting things down to make you want to continue to act.

BTW, Catherine, I totally stole your free consulting idea. I cut mine off at about 35 sessions though. Not nearly as epic as you… And I also credited your awesomeness ;)

Hooray, that’s wonderful! :) Are all your sessions taken?

    So proud!

I keep lists. Even if I carry things over on the list from day to day, it still helps to keep me focused.

    Love the post-its idea!

For short-term goals like projects, I find it really useful to break them down into steps and use something boring like Firetask to remind me on pre-set dates what I should be doing (even if it’s every day, I still need reminding).

For longer-term ‘life-ish’ goals, I find visualisations really useful. Just thinking about things like where do I want to be in 1/5/10 years? Where will I be living? What will I be doing? And then writing it down so I can read it back when times get rough. It helps keep the dream alive baby.

    Hi Catherine,
My biggest goal that I need to keep pushing at is getting the new site up and running by the end of next week (ZOMG!!!!). Okay, that’s scary because I have soooo much left to do. That deadline is because I want to have it finished before I start my new term in college…getting started takes a lot of work and planning which I won’t have much time for once college starts back.

The next goals that will be on the forefront are finishing the 31DBB challenge I have joined, guest posting again (at least 2 times per month!) and getting more consistent with posting on GA even though that is going to a more personal site with random days of blogging about blogging thrown in for fun :) Uhm..yeah, that sounds like work…but having the good people in the challenge to connect with and those in the blogosphere as well should up the fun factor to be greater than the work factor :)

This is SO right – at the beginning of summer I really started watching my goals, and I’ve done more this summer towards my goal of becoming an artist than in many years past!!!

    I’m experimenting with a “two-level goals” system.

Level 1 I got from Dave Navarro. Every day, you write out afresh your 5 most important (big) goals.

Level 2 is inspired by the Kaizen idea. Under the 5 big goals, you write down specific things you plan to do today to work towards those goals.

So it balances the “do something right now” with “make sure it’s ultimately useful”. You also tend to notice if you have a lot of to-dos that doesn’t fit into your ultimate goals, or if one of your goals never gets anything done about it.

I’ve kind of designed an iPhone app for it in my head, but I want to use it for a while first and work out the wrinkles.

I use the little task list that pops up in the gmail screen. I need to come up with something better for the big goals though, sometimes I get mired in the details and forget the bigger picture.

  • Trever Clark

I do the same. Sometimes I try to bring some organization to the lists by using Charlie Gilkey’s planners.

    Good idea!

Fantastic! If you ever want to write a guest post I’d love to hear more about that!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Wow, you’ve got a whole lot going on! Good luck!

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

This is stuff I have to start doing, because for me that answer is almost always, “I have no idea.” :)

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Ooh, I like it! Let me know when the app is live, I need something like that.

Post-its idea is great. Also, I heart me that photo. :)

I don’t have anything useful to contribute to the conversation, but I absolutely love this. That post-it thing is brilliant.

  • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Hmm, me too. Let me know if you come up with something cool…

Keeping my attention focused is a mahooosive challenge for me, I find it really tough. I’m being kinda strict about maintaining a GTD-baseds system. Essentially any random thoughts or distractions – useful or otherwise – get captured into an inbox. Usually Omnifocus or whatever bit of paper is near to hand. The act of writing out the distraction seems to clear it from my head.

Something therapeutic about writing it down I guess.

So to me, reminders don’t really work. Some mechanism for keeping a clear head and not having to stress about what stuff I need to do next is far more useful. But I’m totally in love with the idea of posting motivational messages or artwork. I’m prone to the occasional emotional tailspin and can imagine that helping. Custom iPad slideshow of love sitting on the desk mebbe?

Weirdly enough I only just posted on similar lines! It’s at http://unformation.net/2010/08/undistraction if you’re interested. Do comment with thoughts and feedback!

Breaking down into steps is a tough habit to get in to but totally worthwhile, I love your focus!
